Treble hooks

Postby Bob Daly » Mon Feb 26, 2007 3:23 am

Larry: For La Zona dorados, if you had your choice of trebles between VMC, Gamakatsu, and Owner which would you chose? I was told that the Gamakatsu are by far the sharpest and penetrate the dorados hard mouth better than the other two brands? :o
Thanks and good fishing :D

Hi Bob,
It's obvious who ever you talked to had not tried all the brands mentioned.
The VMC trebles are all but worthless.
The Gamakatsu, specifically the 4X strong are both stiffer and sharper than the VMC, but believe it or not, I have video of large dorados crunching Gamakatsu 4X trebles so hard they actually CLOSED THEM ALMOST SHUT!!
The best, stiffest, sharpest and strongest treble I've ever seen is the Owner ST-66. In a lighter shank the ST-41 is my choice. I've tested these both on fish and in my work shop and, in my mind, there is no room for discussion on the subject.
I suspect you got your advice from a so called "fishing adventure travel" agent who has more miles logged in airplanes than on the water.
good luck,
L
