color choice..

Postby Gaebler20 » Thu Feb 28, 2013 10:09 pm

Larry, with the walleye numbers at an all time low on mille lacs, in your opinion would this change your way of thinking towards lure color? Would you want to use more walleye colors, thinking they may key in on them a little harder, or would you tend to use more perch and tulibee colors? From ive heard, the perch and tulibee numbers havent really changed...
Thanks

Related to this question in reference to musky ( I was going to ask, but since this already has the subject title I was going to start anyways...), how do you think lure color plays a role? Would the overall profile and motion of the bait be the most important factor? What about the "vibration" given off? Would it be best to stay within a color profile that the musky/pike would not be turned off from at all? Should we be more concerned on how the bait attracts the musky according to the lateral line or however that is effected?

Or does it matter at all? I mean are the colors we throw on certain lakes more or less effective or is it some engrained knowledge that someone some day said that "artifical" colors work better on this lake whilst "natural" colors work better on this lake.

Personally, I think what a lure does is most often more important than what color it is or even what it looks like. All of the things mentioned regarding lure qualities are factors. Extremely aggressive or unpressured fish often respond best to sound. Often larger fish in pressured water are not interested in really loud rattling lures.
The stuff my friend Doug Hannon has written about lures attracting versus triggering qualities is pretty good reading. Buck Perry in his book Spoonplugging has some very interesting and valid views on the subject as well.
In fishing there are very, very few hard, fast rules. However, the right lure in the wrong place will never get bit.
You always have to let the fish decide, and you must determine whether the issue is more weighted toward finding them, or fooling them.
