Dear almighty fishing God, Larry

What type of fly fishing rod and reel would you
recommend for fishing mainly for bass, musky, pike.
And what # line is good for species of the bigger size.
thanks

Hi EH.
I'd suggest a 9 foot rod. Minimum line size I'd suggest is #8, maximum is #10. I've caught hundreds of muskies on flies and can PROMISE you any one who thinks a rod larger than a #10 is needed is just flat wrong and does not know what they are talking about. There are many disadvantages in using rods heavier than a 10.
good luck!

Reel selection

Postby sicard3325 » Sun Mar 30, 2008 6:42 pm

I do the same type of fishing in the summer time with large pike flies and clouser minnows. I have found that an eight weight fast action rod works best and an Orvis mid arbour reel in quite possiably the best reel on the market for under 130.00 it has the drag a a much higher priced reel. I use the same reel for pike, salmon, bass, and steelhead. The orvis reel is truely the finest. good luck.
