Lead core vs braid vs mono for trolling crankbaits?

Postby Questor » Wed Jan 24, 2007 8:46 am

Mr. Dahlberg:

What kind of line do you recommend for trolling crankbaits (like spoonplugs) for northerns and largemouths? I've got a line counter trolling reel strung with lead core, but I'd be glad to swap it for braid or mono if it makes sense to do that.

The objective is to get a good bottom bouncing presentation at depths up to about 30 feet. Possibly as much as 35. I'd like to use as short a line as possible to do that because of the relatively small size of the lakes I fish.

I'd rather not use wire. But can you tell me how wire compares to braid for attaining depth?

As always, thanks for taking the time.

Hi q,
The big deal is small dia and low stretch. Buck would've given his left arm for braid!
That's definately what to go with.
Lead core works better for lure that don't dive deep on their own, but is harder to keep track of what's going on.
For max depth and control 18lb, uncoated 7 strand is the best.
best,
