Depends on the type of body of water. river, lake.
If you can, do quick visual of any potential area where they should/might be even risking spooking fish. eliminate shallows by quickest possible visual scan. focus carefully on, in and around best overhead cover and dark bottom, plus on shadow side of objects.
they can lay there and just let you fish thru them with standard lure approaches. If you see them, and they don't see you sometimes they can be finessed with neutral lures, jigged soft plastic etc. with the best sizes usually ranging from four to six inches.
If not visible in shallow water find heaviest cover in which ever cover categories are available. ie, groups of biggest boulders, densest/deepest weeds, densest/deepest wood.
fish w/widest variation of retrieve cadence/speed w/both straight line and non mechanical retrieves.
One guy making longest possible casts with topwater in all directions all the time.
Don't be too pooped to fish right at sunset til just dark in any area you saw either large bait fish like suckers, ciscos, whitefish, etc visually or had fish follow lure.
If you see large bait fish in only one or two places, continue to visit them repeatedly, generating mental map as to their definition in regards to beginning, end, and possible "spot on spot" cover/structure relationships.

good luck!
