Larry,

I would love your recommendations for great muskie guides that take care of their clients and practice the best catch and realease of these awesome fish. Also for these guides the best times of year for their location to catch a monster. I would love to take my dad on a trip of a lifetime. Any where in the United States/ Canada /World is fine with us since we both fly for free.

I am really looking for a fish that I can take a picture with, release for sombody else to enjoy and get a fiberglass mount made. Your help is appreciated. I am so glad the tour de France is over since that was on the tv instead of your fishing shows.

Mike

Hi N
There are lots of good guides, and muskies as well! My suggestion would be based on whether you want to catch one casting or trolling.
What's your preferred method?

Larry lets play devil's advocate. Since I have never caught one in my life I would go for two days. I day of trolling and 1 day of casting for a muskie. Who do you recommend. If it helps to narrow it down I would prefer stay in the United states either Minnasota or Wisconson would be easy and convient to fly into.

Thanks
Mike

Brett Alexander is one of the best trophy muskie guides. He fishes on Lake Michigan's Green Bay in Wisconsin.

If you are mechanically skilled I'm pretty sure you would enjoy casting more than trolling. However, if you are not your odds of catching a musky are much higher trolling.
If you want to simply "catch one" I'd suggest trolling on Lake St Claire. The Alumilite goop team, all rookie muskie anglers, visited St Clair a few weeks back and boated a dozen and a half in a couple of days; including a couple in the 50 inch class.
If you want to catch one casting I'd suggest fishing with Jason Hammernick here in Minnesota.
These bodies of water are a little too far apart to play your devils advocate game.

I would consider the Ottawa River also. If you are serious about learning, if you respect the fish, if you respect your guides, and follow directions absolutely, then I can recommend Marc Thorpe or Mike Lazarus.

I have the utmost respect for them and their dedication to conservation, education, and proper handling of fish; therefore, I want to be confident that you'll be good clients. They will do their absolute best to make a trip of a lifetime for you. They cast and/or troll depending on what the fish are doing. They have a passion for the species and the fishery, and they'll give you an education if you listen to them.

Also, they are usually booked up solid, so you'll have to plan your trip well in advance.

Try this:.Jason Quintano and his cell is 586 350-0934. A quote from Mike the Goop King who sent some of his crew (all first timers!) over there earlier this summer:.."My guys in the shop would more than highly sing their praises. 3 over 50" and they went 21 of 24 in a half day charter!!"

Just today, the guys in my shop were still talking about that trip which was in the end of June. St. Clair is a special body of water and Jason and his crew at Fins and Grins are phenominal. Its mostly trolling out there but if you are looking for numbers and size, not sure you can beat it anywhere.

Here's another place to hunt musky: www.1000islandsfishing.com/muskie.htm. This guide seems to be able to find huge musky in the St. Lawrence River in the Thousand Islands region... like the picture of the 60" monster on the front page!
