BIGGG SMALLIES

Postby gary » Mon Jul 16, 2012 5:46 am

Hi Larry;
I have twice run into this senario, on two different lakes.
Huge smallmouth suspended over deep water, lightly tea stained too gin clear.They're feeding on tiny, almost transparent minnows on top.
They are coming up and gently rowling on the bait, but you can see they are monsters, we are freaking out in the boat!
We have thrown every thing at them big and small.
I thinking fly rod, inexpensibe combo around 150bucks just for these fish.
Am I barking up the right tree?
What rod/reel/fly combo would you recomend.

I'd suggest a nine foot seven or eight weight fly rod. I'd also try subtle top water zig zag type baits like the small surface wide glide super long bomber casts.
Also focus on dawn and dusk, and maybe even dark thirty!
good luck!

The fly rod idea will work, but if you have not practiced casting before, you may not get the job done. Practice casting.

In the conditions you are talking, you would do best with a floating fly line, a 9' tapered leader. The flies should be a streamer that is customed tied or at least ones that have a thin profile and are transparent.

Still, if you are not practiced with a fly rod, Larry's suggestions would probably be a better idea.
I think my bucket list has a hole in the bottom!
