Flyfishing for Pike

Postby fishingman64 » Sat Feb 02, 2008 2:58 pm

Hey Larry,
Last year, in Colorado, I learned how to fly fish for the first time. I bought a bunch of trout gear. This year I'm going to Canada and want to try flyfishing for pike. I'm going to get a new reel designed for pike. Will my 9 ft rod for 5 weight line work for pike or will i have to get a new rod too? thanks.

hi fm
by far the least important part of your set up is the reel.
I'd suggest a 9 foot rod rated for an eight or nine line (any weight forward configuration will do the job. (some might suggest a 10 weight, but i'd say only if you're strong as a horse.)

practice casting, learn to throw a tight, controlled loop.
have fun,
best,
L

Thanks for your help. What should I do for a leader? Should I use wire leaders as if i was using baitcasting gear?
