Lake Trout Growth

Postby tman » Mon Jan 14, 2008 1:30 pm

Hey Larry, Hey All,

I was wondering if anyone knows or has a link to data regarding lake trout growth rates (i.e. 10 yrs. : 10 lbs. ; 25 yrs. : 25 lbs), etc.

Obviously, I would assume that such numbers would fluctuate depending upon a lake's fertility as well as how far north the lake is but any such information would be helpful.

Thanks,

Todd

hey Tman,
Very good question. No doubt, latitude and fertility have a big part of growth rate, and so does species. (there are more than one species of lake trout) The giants that were native to lake surperior are not the same as those found across canada.
As I recall a guy named Crossman did some research on the topic. He's the author of a book called Northern Fishes, which may contain some of his trout research.
If I remember correctly the giants in Great Bear Lake (70 lb range) were estimated to be well in excess of 100 years old.
best,
L
