Fly Rod/Line sizes ?

Postby Henry Schmidt » Mon Apr 09, 2007 5:41 pm

Larry, Im about to take the plunge into fly fishing. I havent used a fly outfit since I was a teen. In my area an 8 weight is the most popular for targeting Snook and Reds. I would uses this outfit for just as much Bass fishing too. Would I be over gunning Bass with an 8wt. and taking all the fun out of it? Im getting confused over issues such as wind and the size of the fly and how they relate in the size you choose. Thanks Henry

Hi H,
I think an eight would be perfect. Actually, among old time bassers, it's the number one choice.
Have fun!

Henry

A six wt. would be more sporting but it would limit you too much. Sometimes its fun to throw big poppers or dahlburg divers for bass. You'll have a tough go with a 6 wt throwing those big bugs into the wind.
Also, bass love to run for cover when hooked. The 8 wt will be welcome to hoist a big bass out of the muck.

Bottom line? The 8 wt is the rod of choice.

Hope that helps.
