Circle hook size help

Postby sakamotok » Tue Mar 20, 2007 11:41 pm

Hello Larry,
I'm hiking my way up the learning curve on using circle hooks. I was reading that circle hook size is an important factor in hookup success (their target was bluegills). Can you suggest what sizes you would use for walleye, for SM bass, and for pike/muskie?
I've been a fan since "Fly Fishing for Pike" - even though I still can't throw the whole line - glad to see you have a great show that can showcase your skill and versatility.
Regards,
Ken

Hi S,
A problem in discussing sizes is that there is no consistancy from one mfr to the next!I think eagle claw makes the only circle hooks small enough for panfish. I'd use size 8-12 depending on the the size of the panfish.
For eyes and smallies I use a size 6 in an owner mutu light with leeches and crawlers, a size bigger with minnows.
For esox I use a 4/0.
Glad you enjoy my efforts, and thanks for the compliment!
best,
L
