Rod Question

Postby sptrix » Sat Mar 17, 2007 8:41 pm

Looking for some advice . . . Last year I got on a lake trout bite where we were trolling crankbaits over humps that came from 100' to about 60' of water. The lake trout were holding on the edge near the top of the humps.

In order to get our baits to the bottom, we were trolling with 7oz - 9oz of weight (in-line sinkers) and had the cranks on 6'-10' 17# leaders behind the lead. I was using a 7' MH musky rod, but it seems there may be something better for this type of fishing.

Ideas anyone?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi S,
whew, how' your elbow holding out! Trolling heavy weights with that long a rod is indeed a man killer. Try the trevalla jigging rods in the shortest stiffest versions offered. Much less work!
I used to use 7 1/2' flippin sticks and I'd "collapse" the rods to make 'em shorter while trolling, then telescope them out after I hooked a fish!
I'm still bothered by lateral epicondilitis (sp?) from those days!
My fav rig is a flutter spoon on a 3 way using either super braid or 7-strand wire.
best,
L
