Split rings

Postby kj197728 » Fri Nov 03, 2006 10:38 pm

I was just wondering if you ever use crankbaits or plugs without the front split ring and tie them on with something like a loop knot or Rapala knot. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to not using the split ring? I see some guys do this with single hooks into plastics and some jerkbaits but that is about it. Thanks if you have any information.

Hi Kj
The front hook on most cranks is located at the "node" , or "pivot" point in relation to how it wiggles.
Removing a split ring would change that slightly, which may or may not be better, but you also sacrifice the advantage a split ring allows in terms of not allowing a fish to leverage open a hook as easily.
In regards to split rings, 99% of lures off the shelf have sub-standard ones. Owner introduced a super strong split ring recently which I put on all my lures that have the potential of being bit by anything big.
With a jerk bait, when you're going for neutral bouyancy or less, a lightweight hook is often necessary.
