The front hook on most cranks is located at the "node" , or "pivot" point in relation to how it wiggles.
Removing a split ring would change that slightly, which may or may not be better, but you also sacrifice the advantage a split ring allows in terms of not allowing a fish to leverage open a hook as easily.
In regards to split rings, 99% of lures off the shelf have sub-standard ones. Owner introduced a super strong split ring recently which I put on all my lures that have the potential of being bit by anything big.
With a jerk bait, when you're going for neutral bouyancy or less, a lightweight hook is often necessary.
