Rod guides

Larry, I have several rods with missing guides from braid to leader connections. I plan on installing new recoil guide sets. Which size guides do you recommend for 65# or 80# braid to mono or fluorocarbon? I tie blood knot for all my leaders.

I would suggest ring size 10 so the knots will pass thru.

Have you considered using the FG knot. I even use it with micro guides with no issues. Just a thought.

Need to learn the FG, I am old school bass angler only used straight mono or straight fluorocarbon on casting and spinning. Recently making the trend to braid with leaders on 200, 300 &400 size reels. Started use braid in 2004 for flipping and frogging. Not a big fan of having a knot in casting line on baitcasters, Spinning not as many issues. The west coast guys from Tactical Bassin videos slowly converted me. They recommend blood knot and it is easy to tie. I also fish in rapids and very fast moving waters the quicker the better. Micro guides are useless in cold weather frozen solid in one cast.

The fg with 80 braid and 100 fluorocarbon cast through guides? I mostly fish 65lb braid to 20 to 30lb leaders. Or finesse 10lb braid to 6lb fluorocarbon.

I will fix the broken guides with recoil knock off to see how they preform https://www.jannsnetcraft.com/double-fo ... 84352.aspx

Before you go w the FG knot- test it thoroughly- if it’s not tied correctly the knot strength is terrible- it was originally developed for tying heavy leader to braid for fish like Tarpon. It’s somewhat complicated and time consuming- I got it right the first couple of times I tied it- then somewhere along the way I picked up a bad habit and had some break offs on big sharks- switched over to an Albright knot and had much better success- it’s easy enough to tie in the dark- if you can get the FG correctly tied- it’s practically a seamless connection. it’s a very valuable knot if you can do it correctly

How long of a leader are you using?

15 feet for 10lb braid to fluorocarbon for spinning. 1 to 8 feet for casting 65lb or 80lb braid to 20-25 mono or fluorocarbon

Caja I do believe the fg knot will go through guides even with 80 pound braid. On. Recent trip I was using 50lbs braid with 100lbs leader with no problem. There are a lot of YouTube videos that will each you how to tie it correctly and fairly fast. I can even tie it at night and so far it has not broken. It just takes practice.

Well this year water is stained to muddy in most rivers in the SE. I will practice FG while rivers are high. Hopefully have it mastered for lower fall river levels. Mono and fluorocarbon seems to ease over rocks in current better than braids.

Found this video of Fg knot https://youtu.be/qQmUN0L4F6c
I can now tie fg knot as fast as 9 turn blood knot.
The FG is a little tricky tying 10lb braid to 6lb fl , it is easy too break 6lb fluorocarbon.
Thanks
