Spinning reels

Postby Tigerlily » Sat Jul 22, 2017 5:25 pm

Hi Larry:
Looking for recommendations for a good spinning reel for tarpon fishing? I will be fishing off the beach and the tarpon are up to around 80lbs.

Thank you

Penn, Diawa, Quantum and Shimano all produce good spinning reels suitable for tarpon. I would not suggest purchasing their low end or necessarily the very top high end models either. Depending on your budget i'd buy the best you can afford and make sure the size is sufficient to hold the amount of line you will need.

Spinning reels

Grease gears and oil bearings. You could grease both gears and bearings though because grease will last longer because its obviously thicker. Not sure Id put mineral oil in a reel.

Ive never successfully cleaned out a spinning reel, maybe River Monster will chime in. I know he has experience with spinning reels.
