Alaska Halibut

Larry,

I remember your trip to Alaska on HUNT FOR BIG FISH. I enjoyed it, but never figured that I would ever be headed that direction.

Just this week I get a request from my Daughter in Law to go with her, my son, and my two Grandkids. Then today I get an invitation from a boss to go next year. But...... neither really know where to go.

When you were doing your research, do you remember an area that had the "barn doors" but also a few 40 to 60 pound "trainers" available?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
AKA

I am so happy to hear of your good fortune!
It's been a while since I was up there, but Dutch Harbor is where the best odds were for a really big one. However, getting there and back can be pretty iffy.
The most amazing spot was off Kayak island, but again, really difficult to get to.
From what I hear most recently it would be hard to beat Tim Berg's operation. I will email you a few pics I got recently from a friend of mine.
Suggest taking the grandkids stream fishing for coho salmon if your dates line up with your other activities. They are aggressive, fight well and usually pretty easy to catch. They plus is you can often sight fish for them.
have fun, be safe!

Thanks Larry,
I will be looking for the pictures.

Is there a better time to be there for the Halibut? When are the Coho running?

I sure appreciate your information.

Thanks again,
AKA

coho run pretty late. i'd guess oct, nov. halibut can be caught pretty much any time. They are shallower in areas that salmon carcasses are available.
best check with the area you are headed to for specifics.

Hi AKA. Fished around Montague Island many times starting out in either Homer or Valdez. Good shot for a "barndoor". Make sure to check the tides before picking a date. Still head down the Alaska Peninsula for big silvers every September. 28Yrs in a row!

Thanks Bob.

Been on my knee too much lately, I guess that 3 months after replacement is too soon to be "recovered", so I have decided to skip the trip for this year.

Will send my Son, his wife, and two kids, to visit family in Anchorage this year. With a little luck they will get the lay of the land and I can go with them next year. I have passed your information on to them.

Thanks all

AKA. If the kids head to Anchorge this fall, they should be able to catch some silvers in Ship Creek which is in downtown Anchorage. Silvers should start running in a few weeks with prime time first 2 weeks in September.

Hey AKA: Not sure if you noticed but the derby leader out of Valdez is a monster butt weighing 374 lbs! Largest to date being entered since the tourney was originated. I am heading to the Peninsula in a few weeks with a stop in Anchorage. If you want I could pick up some fishing literature for you and mail it out when I get back?

Thanks Bob, but for me, I think I will have to see what happens next year.

I told my son about Ship Creek and he decided to go up last week with his wife and two young kids. Took a day to visit family, took a day for a day-cruise, spent a day on Ship Creek and a day on the ocean for Kings and small halibut.

He told me Ship Creek was boring, loaded with Pinks, 18" to 24", and the challenge was getting a lure or bait through a hole without a fish on it. He said he may have made it through them without a fish twice. On the other hand, even though it was early, Silvers were coming up on the high tides and he had no issues with catching some good ones. Like me, he prefers the Silvers.

Just trolled a few miles outside of Anchorage for Kings, and of course the biggest have already spawned and died this year. Still, he and his 10 year old son caught limits of Kings. Later they caught several up to 30 pounds Halibut to complete the day.

What I have learned is that I have an open invitation from his wife's family to come up, that fishing is good even around Anchorage, and that as long as you plan the season a little, you can have a great time up their.

Hey A. K. Just back from the Alaska Peninsula. Fantasic silver fishing with best day at 117 for me. Found a new area where they were finning around the mouth of a small creek and there were thousands of them. Actually too easy! Weather was as usual poor.

Hi Bob, good to hear about your report.

That is what my son said about the pinks, too easy. I think that makes the two of you dedicated fishermen when catching fish on every cast is boring. LOL
