Are the new products much different from braided lines we've had? I like to tie braids directly to lures when I can get away with it, but I did not realize that knot strength on braids is about half the line strength. True? What is the strength of a braid to a fluorocarbon leader? Is this a solution or another weak link?

It all depends on the knots you use. With good knots (uni family) you should be getting higher strength from your knots than 50%.
