I need to make a lure that has the density of balsa wood. Wondering which foam would come the closes to that type of floation.

Alumifoam is your best bet.

If trying to match balsa exactly, the 320 is the best match. As Larry indicates, the Alumafoam is the best overall lure for making lures with, but it is about as dense as cedar wood.

Like balsa, the 320 is not that tough, but because I use an Alumalite shell over it, it works well for my lures.

thanks ak, I saw musky lure and didn't want to suggest anything less tough. of course you are right! another option, and likely the best is to mix the two foams to get the best compromise. It's amazing how just a little 320 it takes to make alumifoam foamier! Also, I should mention, by the time you get a finish on the 320 that's tough enough for teeth as the alumifoam the buoyancies will be pretty similar.

Great point Larry, the reason I use the shell method...... and still I get some damage just like balsa.
