Rod handle wrap?

After watching the episode several times, was just wondering the purpose of the wrap over the cork grip. I assume for gripping purposes or was it for something else? Also, wondering if it was tape or some other material?

The rods with the spiral tape wrap belonged to the guy I was fishing with. I think he's a former hockey player is feels naked without tape on what ever he's hanging on to. I suspect it's also on his tooth brush...
In other words, I have no idea, other than making the same assumption as you have!
