Hi C,
I've used them lots on atlantic salmon, where their greatest virtue is that when tied on copper or brass tubes they sink quickly.
I messed with tubes years ago when first experimenting with and developing woven flashabou tubing but didn't like their casting characteristics on long bodied patterns.v
I tie all my larger patterns as sparse as possible, trying only to create an illusion of bulk, with an absolute minimum of air resistance so I don't need much shank space to hold lots of material.
I've seen some interesting things tied on plastic tubes
Give tubes a try for yourself and see how they work!
best,
L
