Top side of top water lures and flies.

Hi Larry,

On a top water lure or fly, how important is the detail and color on the TOP side of the offering?

Would you list your three favorite lure or fly colors and tell us when you would favor each?

Hi Mike,
I think the top side details are for triggering the fisherman to buy it, not for getting the fish to bite it.
I usually give the fish three choices, dark, light or fluourescent.
If anything, I usually try to match the color shade to that of the water, bottom or vegetation.
Often pays after popping a bunch on one color to offer the gang another. Sometimes it will get you a couple more from the school.
Also depends somewhat how high up on the food chain the creature I'm fishing is located.
Sometimes rather than trying to imitate specific forage it pays to appeal to a predators instinct of natural selection, and toss something totally foreign and out of place.
best,
L
