Revo vs Curado DSV

Postby Chris M » Sat Jan 27, 2007 3:30 pm

Hey Larry,
I have recently bought the 201 DHSV, I am very happy with the purchase. I decided on the DSV after a long comparison to the new REVOs by Abu. The REVO boasts a max of 24# of drag! Holy cow, isn't that a bit of an overkill? I don't know of many situations that I will use the full 12# of drag that the 201 DHSV has.

I caught this 4lb 2oz Black Rockfish last night and it is only the second fish I have caught on the DHSV. I had the drag buttoned down but this fish wasn't too much of a test for the reel.

Nice work on the rod. Very interesting pics, nothing like I get to see here in s. Fl. I always thought the rockfish spoken about in Cal. was just another name for a Striper. You'll love the Curado. I have 2 of the newer ones and look forward to getting a 300 soon. Here we want an extreme drag while flipping/pitching to snook under mangroves/brazilian peppers. You got to drag them out immediately or you lose them.

Stripers being called Rockfish is mostly an Eastcoast name, even in the Bay area they are never refered to as Rockfish.
The same extreme drag is needed for these Rockfish and other fish like Cabezon for keeping them out of the rocks. They live in the rocks and once they hit whatever it is they are after, lure or other bait they go right back in to their hole. Also basicaly flippin/pitching right in front of the rocks and dippin into holes, not real long cast off the jetti. But 24# when the reel is only 12# class reel, even if you are using some big # braid I can't imagine needing that much drag plus you wouldn't have much line on the spool. I think it is a feature more for hooking customers. I like the confidence that the Curado gives with 12#, I think that is plenty.
I am waiting for the 301. Do you have a REVO?

No I dont, the Revo looks suspiciously like a Daiwa to me, probably because of its Taiwanese roots. I havd at one time relied solely on ABu's International series reels like the Pro Rockets and such. But after the Eon debacle Abu has taken a tumble into the basement, I'll never try an Abu again. And after watching Iaconelli mangle the American flag at the Classic, I'll never buy from the sponsors that didnt fire him! Abu's parent company.

You guys already know my feelings on the subject. Why look for a new horse when you're riding Sea Biscuit!
Exerting that kind of pressure on an Abu reel just might bend the end pins on the spool. A dozen years ago, using the old, so called "good" Abu baitcasters I had that problem frequently. Under heavy pressure the spool would "bulge" or bend forward causing the insides of the frame to actually "lathe off" the outside edges of the spool! After one fish fought under what I call heavy pressure, my hands would be coated with black dust from the spool and 20# mono would freely slide between the spool and frame, which of course caused constant cut offs when trying to cast!
My advice, stick with Shimano.
best,
L
