Spinnerbait trailer hook orientation

Postby fishingChamplain » Sat Jan 26, 2013 5:49 pm

I have a question concerning spinnerbait trailer hook orientation. I have only seen the trailer hooks on spinnerbaits oriented facing the same direction as the main body hook, but I was curious if you've ever turned the trailer hook so it is facing down? I have toyed with the idea and may try it come this spring, but I was wondering what your opinion may be (or if you've tried it already and the results on hook set... worse/better/no difference?)

hi fc
Twenty years ago it was common practice for a while with pike fishermen using spinnerbaits. It was lethal, quite literally, as they'd often get that down hook directly dead center where their gills all join right behind the tongue.
Obviously, the lure is not nearly as snagless, but in answer to your question; yes.

Thanks for the info on the trailer hook orientation Larry. Since I'm a catch and release kind of guy, I won't be trying the turned down method. Watchhiller's suggestion of adding a treble hook would be ok on large lures for pike and musky, but I think I'll stick with a single hook trailer for bass. Thanks again.
