Throughout the 19th century, America's main focus was rural farming. At different times the government and people have been responsible for providing a decent existence. People had been farming for many years and surviving on their own by doing so. Farmer's all across the nation began to experience dropping crop prices. And were being charged high storage and shipping tariffs. It was becoming harder and harder to make a living as a farmer during this time.
As a result of these complications. Many farmers began to close shop and head for the city. There was a major push towards urban area's at the beginning of the 20th century. This resulted in era that is known as the industrial revolution. This era was known for aiding in making new ideas for things such as: transportation, manufacturing, and agriculture. Many inventions that are still used today. Were developed and made during this time. There was also a shift from people only depending on themselves. For providing a decent existence. Too them looking towards the government to help aid them in this. The industrial revolution was what led up to a period of reform known as the progressive era.
During the progressive era there was a push towards change in America. People began to notice corruptions among many different industry's. There was exploitation of children, racial segregation, corrupt police and government, and ruthless and unsafe business practice. Women were also not seem much in the work placed during this time. The citizens of America demanded reform. You began to see restricted child labor laws, and improved working conditions. Also Congress passed laws establishing federal regulation of food, drug, and railroad industries. Congress also pushed to strengthened the anti-trust laws. A federal banking system was developed during this time. And woman were given the right to vote. Also a law prohibiting the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages. Known as Prohibition happened during this time. This showed how people were beginning to depend more on government. And less on themselves to provide a decent existence.
After the period of reform known as the progressive era took place. During the 1920's there was a time of relief known as the roaring twenties. People to began to not focus on the problems that existed. But began to focusing more on relaxing and enjoying themselves. This was time known for its party's and dances. And the jazz movement took place during this time. Where jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong got his name in the clubs around the city. People began buying on credit. Buying stocks and other needed items on credit. Slowly putting themselves into debt. As stock prices began to go higher and higher. People began to sell their stocks. Causing a selling frenzy. Which caused a day in history known as the Black Tuesday. A day when the stock market collapsed, sending America in a great depression.
Great depression was caused by the crashing of the stock market. It made millions of Americans lose their job. And many ended up becoming homeless. Entire family's were on the streets and in debt. People began to look for the government to help aid in the problem. After ten years of unemployment, low profits and prices, poverty, and a economy that seemed to be at a stand still. President Franklin Roosevelt stepped in with his idea known as the New Deal relief program. The New Deal help aid in reconstructing Americas economy. Ensuring Americans that the government is making sure a decent existence is provided.
Thought these different periods of time. Many different groups of minorities were established. One of the notable recognized minority group is the African Americans. A period of reform known as the Civil Rights Movement took place during the mid 20th century. During this time African Americans pushed to abolished racial discrimination. Many forms of protest took place during this time. Freedom Marches regularly took place and sit- ins white only restaurant's. One thing African-Americans practiced was no-violent protest. During this movement people began to look towards themselves to provided a decent existence. The knew if they didn't do anything to make drastic changes. Than nothing would be done to ensure a decent existence for every citizen in America. This is what people of the civil rights movement fought for.
All of these things have led up to how a decent existence is provided today. From rural farming that showed Americans how they had to depend on themselves to provided a living. That led into the industrialization and progressive reform period. Where Americans were only depending on government to make changes. The roaring twenties was the next to come. Followed by the collapse of the stock market causing the great depression. This had Americans looking up towards the government to restore their lives and economy. The government was in charge of providing a decent existence at this time. But as the period known as civil rights movement began to happen. People began to look at how to provided racial equality and stable life in America. No longer did Americans think that the government was going to help. So they took things into there own hands to ensure change. At different times the government and people have been responsible for providing a decent existence.
