you can cut the lid of a tin can about half way around the edge, and fold the lid down or cut it off.

Set some rocks in it, and put it in about 1' of water with a soft bottom and little current.
Bury the can to the lids edge, and put a flat rock on top of it.

The madtom will seek out the shelter, as will crawfish.
Flagging a bush helps to remember where you hid "the mini-cave", but landowners may not approve so get permission on the flagging.
Also make sure to check state laws for trapping fish...could be illegal where you live

Or you could just buy some of the madtom plastics available and put it on a 3/16oz football head and crawl it slowly through the rocks.

Case plastics has some nice baits.

Thanks Patrick I will try that after I check the regulations. I do pretty well imitating them with a 5" grub, but sometimes they get pickey.

Yeah Rhett smallmouths and walleye mainly. Sometimes you catch a catfish or muskie.
